Checks and balances is the constitutional design that allows each branch of government to restrain excesses of the others while maintaining functional harmony.

Purpose 

Checks and balances allow each branch of government to restrain excesses of the others while still functioning independently. This system promotes accountability and prevents abuse without paralyzing governance.
