The Eye is the Lamp of the Body

By Atty. James Dennis C. Gumpal, J.D., M.D.

“The eye is the lamp of the body.

So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.

If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

~Matthew 6:22-23,ESV

The eye is our body’s guide, much like a lamp that illuminates where you are going. This imagery applies to various vocations, especially in our profession of law. Just as a lamp guides through darkness, we lawyers are called to uphold the torch of  truth and justice, serving not just our clients but also our communities and the nation at large.

The Eye as a Lamp: A Metaphor for Integrity

The eye symbolizes a person’s moral and spiritual focus. A “healthy eye” is clear and focused on what is good and upright. For us, this “healthy eye” represents the integrity with which we practice our profession. We are entrusted with great responsibility—clients rely on us for guidance through complex and dark legal landscapes, and the community depends on us to uphold justice. If our vision is clouded by personal gain or dishonesty, we risk leading our clients and society into confusion, lack of hope,  and moral depravity —- sure ingredients of societal decadence and demise.

Having a “healthy eye” as a lawyer means more than just knowing the law; it means being guided by the principles of fairness, truth, and compassion. When we focus on these values, our actions brighten not only our path but also the paths of those we serve.

In this way, we can be compared to a lamp, much like the Psalmist’s description in Psalm 119:105:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (ESV).

Just as God’s word is a guiding light, we are called to use the law to serve as a beacon of justice, shedding light on the truth and advocating for those who need their voice. The healthy “eye” reflects our dedication to serving the greater good, not just the immediate needs of our clients.

A Lawyer’s Duty to Clients: Illuminating the Path to Justice

Our duty to our clients involves more than just providing legal advice—it is about guiding them through challenging situations with clarity and integrity. Much like the lamp that can be carried from place to place, shedding light in darkness, we bring insight into situations that may be difficult for others to understand.

Clients often come to us in moments of distress or confusion, and it is our role to provide clear, honest counsel. With a “healthy eye,” we see beyond the immediate outcome and seek to promote our client’s best interest with fairness and compassion. Our goal is not just to win cases but to do so in a way that upholds justice and moral integrity.

A Lawyer’s Duty to the Community and Nation: Lighting the Way for Others

Beyond our duty to our clients, we also have a profound responsibility to our communities and our country. Our profession is strategic in upholding the rule of law, which serves as the foundation for a just society. We, as practitioners of justice, are lamps set on a hill—we are visible examples of how justice and truth can prevail in even the darkest of circumstances. Let us not allow ourselves to be tools for bribery, graft and corruption, and the perpetuation of the poverty of our fellow citizens. When we act with honesty and a sense of duty, we help to create a society where justice, fairness, and truth shine brightly. In so doing, we confirm to ourselves that indeed, we are children of the Light.

“For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Walk as children of light.”

~Ephesians 5:8 (ESV)
